Celebrity Hairstylist Ken Paves is everywhere right now. He popped up on this season of Shear Genius and traveled around the globe with his BFF Jessica Simpson on their new show, The Price of Beauty. Ken also has a super popular line of hairdo Clip-in Extensions with Jessica, and he recently launched a new line of Professional Styling Tools, which includes hair dryers, styling irons, and curling irons. Ken was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some Hair On The Brain questions about his new line!
Hair On The Brain: Why did you decide to do a line of hair tools?
Ken Paves: The inspiration behind the line was an easy transition for me–I am always using different styling aids from tools, extensions and product–and have been able to figure out what works best for women these days to keep their hair routine effortless, easy, and limitless. The tools allow them to define their own style by setting the trends rather than following them.
HOTB: What were important features that you wanted to include in your hair dryer, styling iron, and curling iron?
Ken Paves: I wanted to create professional grade styling tools–those used in salons like my own–but give the consumer a reasonable price point and with limitless options. The Professional Styling Iron allows the consumer to straighten, create waves and curl. It ranges from a cool 250 degrees (which is cool enough to use on my new Tru2Life hairdo extensions) to 410 degrees. The Professional Hair Dryer is a full 1800-Watts, which is what I use in my salons and on my celebrity clients. But it is also lightweight, and has concentrated airflow; it will quickly become a staple for all women.
HOTB: What do you think sets your hair tools apart from others on the market today?
Ken Paves: There’s a big jump in the styling tools category. There are drugstore brands with drugstore prices, and then there are salon-grade brands with salon-grade prices. I wanted to create a line that offered both the quality and an affordable price tag.
HOTB: You have a travel-sized hair dryer and styling iron. Those must come in handy because you travel a lot. Can you talk a bit about why you saw travel-sized tools important to include?
Ken Paves: I do travel a lot, and I see what happens when you arrive to a hotel that has low-grade powered tools. Your hair does not come out the same! My travel tools were so important to include in the debut collection. Also, the Travel Series Professional Styling Iron heats up to 410 degrees so quickly and stays hot, making it easy to use on men, bangs, and short hair too.
HOTB: What does your BFF Jessica Simpson think of the new line?
Ken Paves: She loves them!
HOTB: Can you give us a few tips on how to achieve a great blowout at home?
Ken Paves: There are some easy tips you can follow to achieve an effortless blowout. First, start off with clean shampooed and conditioned hair. It’s best to look for ingredients that won’t strip hair of its natural oils, like parabens or SLS, like in my new Self Help: Care of Ken Paves collection that launches this month (May). Next, make sure to have the right tools, like my Ken Paves Professional Styling Tools, a Mason Pearson paddle brush, a round boar bristle brush, like a Spornette. And have the right styling products from a shine serum, a volumizing spray, and hairspray. Also, this is a great time to play with my hairdo Clip-In Extensions to add volume, and length to your blowout.
