I first read about hair being used to soak up oil from the gulf spill from Hairroin Salon. They’re donating hair clippings to the cause. And then I got an email this morning with this video from Dorsey, a HOTB reader. Did you know a pound of hair can absorb a quart of oil in one minute and can be reused up to 100 times? Makes sense right–hair collects oil! The video is from Matter of Trust, the organization behind the hair for oil spills program. It’s pretty amazing.
If you work at a salons and want to donate, sign up for the hair for oil spills program. And check out the instructions here.
For those who don’t work in the hair industry, but want to support this awesome cause, there are other tax-deductible ways to donate listed here!
i hope more salons choose to donate!
Thank you, Valerie, for posting this. I was unaware of the program, but I love it. I live on the Gulf (in Florida) and this disaster is so upsetting. My beloved Gulf, where I have been swimming since I was a baby, will never be the same. Anything, big or small, that anyone can do to help would be great.
Chris: how is it there from your perspective?
OMG! I’m trying to spread the wood about this in my local salons and dog groomers aroung my town for community service for school! I’m really into it!! It’s so sweet.
that’s great, Kelsey! It’s a very cool program.
This is amazing! thanks for sharing. I am going to tell the salons and groomers in my neighborhood about it!
Awesome, gidget!
Valerie, luckily we’re way southeast of the spill. But if the winds or currents shift, that could change. My heart goes out to the people in Louisiana and Mississippi, who are closest to the spill. A lot of people are working hard to mitigate the damage, but until they close the leak, they’re fighting an uphill battle.
Chris: Oh, I know. I feel so awful for those people, the ocean, and the ocean life. it’s terrible.
I really want to do more i hope they stop it soon they should of had a back up plan to their backup plan!!! this is going to hurt many forms of life
