It’s way too soon to think about fall weather, but it’s not too soon to think about fall trends. A major fad will be matte nail polish. Hopefully, by that point we will all be tired of neons and ready for something a little more subdued.
The OPI Fall ’09 collection is made up of classic OPI colors in new, matte finishes. The shades are not meant to be worn with base or top coats, and you should also avoid using hand lotion near your nails. The line will be available starting July 1st online and in stores.
Thanks to the awesome nail blog Vampy Varnish, I have some exclusive pictures of the OPI matte polishes. Check them out and let me know what you think.
Lincoln Park After Dark is a polish I have worn for years. In fact, I have the glossy version on my toes right now. I like this matte shade a lot, and I will definitely try it out. My only problem is that it looks a little you colored in your nails with Magic Marker. But really this shade is much richer and more intense–not streaky or watered like a marker at all.
Russian Navy in glossy was good in theory, but every time I used it, it bugged me. I’d look down at my hands and think: sparkly blue nails? Really? But the matte version looks better. I like the satiny finish and the deep color. I think the sparkly aspect of the glossy Russian Navy was what always bothered me, so I think I might like this matte version better. And it looks really cute in the bottle.
Alpine Snow looks like White Out. I’d have to see it in person to make my final decision, but I don’t foresee myself wearing white nail polish anyway.
You Don’t Know Jacques! is not a shade that I typically use, but I’m excited about the matte version. This polish looks really chic; I’m curious to try it out in real life. Will I love brown matte nails? Or will I hate them?
Gargantuan Green Grape is my least favorite of the matte polishes. I hate this color. It looks totally costumey and not flattering at all. Boo.
La Paz-itively Hot is a hot fuchsia pink. And according to Vampy Varnish, it has an almost satin-like finish. I wonder how this would look as a pedicure? I’m not sure I’d wear this on my nails, but it might look cute on the toes.
Ok, HOTB readers, which ones do you love? Which are your least favorites?
looks like magic marker to me! yuk!
I’m so excited!!! I use Lincoln Park after dark alot, too in the fall and I cannot wait to use the matte version! You Don’t Know Jacques looks gorgeous, too. Although I hate to use lighter polish becuase I end up getting haircolor all over my hands and it ruins them! <3
I’ve been dying for a matte finish polish! I knew they’d do it eventually. I’ve typically steered away from any polish with even a slight sparkle in it since, like, middle school. It’s so much more modern to have a shimmer-free paint job. I’ve also thought it might be interesting to have a subtle pattern/texture stamped into the surface too, but maybe I’m getting ahead of myself.
oh oh…my age is showing! Guess I’m not very hip!So I better try it in the fall…
Ewwh…personally, I will stick with my non-matte nailpolish! Two reasons: 1) its streaky, like marker, and 2) you can see every mistake. And glossy (not glittery!) nails just look healthier. This is one trend I won’t be trying. 🙁
I am a nail polish horse – and I hope this trend is short lived. It looks like primer. I like pretty – and this is poopy.
Any advice on where to find these nailpolishes? I tried penny’s, nordstrom, sally’s (which apparently doesn’t even carry opi), many salons, and trade secret, and even the OPI website and cannot find it ANYWHERE! I can find all the originals but not the matte collection. Every time I ask the store they say that other people have asked about it as well but they never heard about it…I don’t know what to do!
Ashley,
I don’t know where you live but in L.A. the fall colors of OPI are hitting the salons. I was at Gloss this week and the OPI Matte colors were in. Also, I did a quick search and found them for sale on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/OPI-Matte-Nail-Lacquers/dp/B002ED4M0K
And on beautyofasite http://www.beautyofasite.com/p-16148-opi-matte-nail-lacquers.aspx
Does this polish look good with a top coat?
Chelsea, I think if you wear them with a (glossy) top coat they’d be fine. There are also matte top coats…
I just got Russian Navy matte on my fingers and absolutely A-dore it!
Awesome, Jane. I love that color.
